How to Choose a Cardigan Length

A cardigan hem changes the balance of an outfit. You do not need a new wardrobe to compare lengths—start with the trousers, skirt or jeans you wear most often.

Find your reference point

Put on a familiar outfit and stand naturally in front of a mirror. Hold a measuring tape at the top of your shoulder, near the neck, and let it fall toward the front. Mark where you would like the hem to sit. Compare that length with the garment measurement on the cardigan page.

Height alone is not enough to predict the hemline. Torso length, shoulder shape and the way a knit drapes also matter. Product photographs help show a silhouette, but the listed measurements are the better starting point for your own proportions.

A shorter hem

A cardigan that finishes near the waist or upper hip leaves more of a higher waistband visible. It can be useful when you want the shape of wider trousers or a skirt to remain clear. Check the actual length rather than relying on words such as “short” or “cropped.”

An everyday hip length

A mid-length cardigan works across many daily outfits. Decide whether you want the bottom of your shirt to show below it. If you plan to button it, check the bust and hem area so it can sit comfortably without pulling.

A longer line

Longline cardigans add coverage over a tee and trousers. Consider where the hem will meet your thigh or knee and whether you prefer a straighter outline or an open drape. Compare the length with a coat or long cardigan you already like.

Give the front opening a role

The same length can look different when worn open or fastened. An open front creates two vertical edges; a buttoned front creates a more continuous shape. Try both with a cardigan at home to see what you prefer before choosing a new silhouette.

Make your final comparison

Check length, bust and sleeves together. A longer garment is not automatically roomier through the shoulders. Use our measurement guide, then browse the cardigan collection for a style with the proportions you want.
